As specialists based in the Nelson region and Marlborough, we know there are a lot of myths out there about varicose veins. One of the biggest of those myths is that varicose veins don’t affect young people!
Varicose veins are a common issue in New Zealand with up to 40% of women and 25% of men affected by varicose veins of varying severity. But, contrary to popular belief, it is not just seniors that are affected!
Why young people get varicose veins:
There is always much debate around the cause of varicose veins. You will get those that advocate they are caused by occupation or lifestyle choices. But the fact remains that the primary cause of vein disease is genetics. In fact, it accounts for about 80% of cases. So, it is for that very reason that young people can suffer from varicose veins. At enhanceskin, we treat plenty of clients in their 20s and 30s. We have even treated teenagers!
As an aside, at the recent Australasian College of Phlebology Conference which I recently attended, an interesting theory and experimental treatment for very early Vein Valve failure (which leads to Varicose veins) was presented by a fascinating German Phlebologist/ Inventor, so there is hope yet!
Treatment options:
All of our treatments are walk-in and walk-out.
- Ultrasound Guided Foam Sclerotherapy (UGFS) uses specialised ultrasound equipment to guide injections of sclerosant which permanently closes the vein. This procedure is virtually painless, so requires no anaesthesia.
- Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA), the gold standard for varicose vein treatment, again, requires no general anaesthesia or hospital stay. You walk in and walk out (wearing compression stockings for two weeks), and you are even able to drive home afterwards.
- The newest treatment we offer is Venaseal, a medical glue that closes off the affected veins. There is no need for stockings in those who it suits as a treatment! And air travel is allowed at any point after treatment.
Before we embark on any treatment plan, we offer a COMPLIMENTARY full doctor’s vein assessment, and a scan to help to determine the treatment most suitable for you. Your treatment plan also includes follow-up appointments for twelve months afterwards.
