As the Top of the South’s leading vein clinic, clients often ask us what treatments we offer. When we explain our treatment options, including Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy (UGS), the next question is usually, what is sclerotherapy? So, in this month’s article, we thought we would answer that question.
What is sclerotherapy?
In a nutshell… During sclerotherapy, we inject a solution directly into varicose veins (we do this using Ultrasound guidance), causing them to collapse, close off, and eventually be absorbed by the body. The procedure is virtually painless (your legs may feel heavy or have a deep ache- similar to the end of a bad day on your feet), requiring no anaesthesia and taking around an hour.
Before the procedure, Dr David assesses your varicose veins using ultrasound or visual examination to determine the suitability of this treatment for you. Sclerotherapy can be less effective on larger veins. In these circumstances, we would consider the alternative treatment of EVLA (in association with Sclerotherapy).
Remember your initial consultation with us is complimentary and has no obligation.
If Dr David considers this a suitable treatment for your varicose veins and you are happy to proceed, we’ll schedule an appointment for your treatment.
At your next appointment, Dr David will insert a small needle directly into the targeted varicose veins. He then injects the sclerosant into the vein. The sclerosant causes the vein walls to swell, stick together and seal shut, stopping blood flow.
After injecting the solution, Dr David will ask you to wear compression stockings. This keeps the treated veins constricted and ensures your veins recede correctly following treatment.
You will be able to resume normal activities immediately after your procedure. Most patients are happy to return to work the next day. Walking at least 45-60 minutes daily post-treatment in the first two weeks is vital.
You may see results within four to six weeks if you undergo sclerotherapy for smaller varicose veins. It may take three to four months for larger varicose veins to see results.
At enhanceskin, your follow-up appointments are included in the cost of your initial treatment.
We hope we’ve answered the question, ‘What is sclerotherapy?’ But if you have any more questions about the treatment, please get in touch with us, and we’ll be happy to answer these.
