Stretch marks (or Striae as they are called in dermatology) are forms of scarring on your skin. Tearing of the dermis causes stretch marks. Over time they may diminish, but they will not disappear completely. Stretch marks are often the result of the stretching of your skin associated with rapid growth (common in puberty). They can also be a result of rapid weight gain (e.g. pregnancy or muscle building). If you have stretchmarks talk to us about a consultation; available at our Nelson clinic or the Churchill Private Hospital in Blenheim.
What treatment can help you with stretch marks?
The best treatment option is a combination of PRP and Micro-needling. This combination supports healing and rejuvenation in the underlying dermis as well as treating the superficial component of the skin. With repeat treatments we are able to thicken, tighten and stimulate new collagen and elastin – improving the elasticity of the skin, its appearance and the way it adheres to your body.
Micro-needling
The technique of medical micro-needling has been shown to increase the remodelling of the skin. By using multiple needles that pierce the skin, activating the body’s own healing process, micro-needling enhances rejuvenation results. Micro-needling is great for tightening and toning skin, reducing acne, ice pick and chicken pox scarring, stretch marks, wrinkles and fine lines, treating alopecia and reducing the dimpling effect of cellulite.
PRP – Platelet Rich Plasma
PRP is a procedure that involves taking a blood sample, concentrating the platelets from that sample and reinjecting the platelets back into the body to assist healing and regenerate tissue. It can assist in the reduction of stretch marks.
What else causes Stretch Marks?
Hormonal changes may also influence stretchmarks. These can occur through puberty, pregnancy and muscle building.
While applying creams can support skin moisture it is the health and quality of the dermis that changes its appearance – as in stretch marks. To reverse stretch marks we go further than just skin deep. A combination of PRP and Microneedling will get you a fantastic long-lasting result.
If you are a little squeamish about needles and rolling techniques, we understand. We apply local anaesthetic cream and use our Cryo-Jet cooling machine to ensure your treatment is as comfortable as possible.
