As we quietly wilt in the heat, a good night’s sleep seems to be more challenging to come by. So, the last thing you need is restless legs syndrome keeping you awake too!
What is Restless Legs Syndrome?
Firstly, let’s examine the symptoms of Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS). RLS is a common condition of the nervous system, causing an unpleasant crawling or creeping sensation in the feet, calves and thighs. Those affected complain of intense itching, involuntary twitches, and a “pins-and-needles” feeling. Symptoms are typically worse at night. Consequently, those who suffer will invariably always move their legs to get comfortable and find relief from the symptoms.
The link with venous insufficiency:
Over the years, studies have documented a connection between varicose veins and restless legs syndrome. This 2007 study, documented in ‘Phlebology: The Journal of Venous Disease’ determined that Restless Leg Syndrome appears to be a common overlapping clinical syndrome in patients with Chronic Venous Disorders.
Varicose Vein Treatments = A Good Night’s Sleep!
Additionally, a further study investigated whether varicose vein treatment for patients with chronic venous insufficiency would improve restless leg syndrome. You can view the full study here. The results of the study held no surprises for us. It determined that correcting venous insufficiency improves restless leg symptoms.
So, if you’re suffering from RLS talk to us about available treatment options. All of our varicose vein treatments are minimally invasive and require no hospital stay.
Varicose Vein Treatments:
- Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy (UGFS) uses specialised ultrasound equipment to guide injections of sclerosant which permanently closes the vein. This procedure is virtually painless, so requires no anaesthesia.
- Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA), the gold standard varicose vein treatment, again, requires no general anaesthesia or hospital stay. You walk in and walk out (wearing compression stockings for two weeks), and you are even able to drive home afterwards.
- The newest treatment we offer is Venaseal, a medical glue that closes off Varicose Veins. There is no need for stockings in those who it suits as a treatment! And air travel is allowed at any point after treatment.
