There’s a common misconception that varicose veins are a women’s issue. Perhaps this is because some women develop varicose veins during pregnancy. But the truth is that men also suffer from varicose veins. In fact, around 25% of men in New Zealand will suffer from varicose veins of varying severity. So, in this article, we thought we’d focus on the fellas.
Men with Varicose Veins:
So why do men get varicose veins? Aside from pregnancy and hormonal changes, it’s for the same reasons women do! Excess weight, age, and a sedentary lifestyle may all contribute. But the leading cause of why some men develop varicose veins over another person will all boil down to the genetic card they are dealt!
In short, if parents or grandparents have suffered from varicose veins, you are more likely to be too.
Vein symptoms in men?
Some men may have visible symptoms. Varicose Veins can present as bulging, blue-coloured ropey cords running beneath the surface of your skin. But, they are not always visible, as they can be located deeper in the leg. Some things to look out for are skin changes and achy, heavy or tired legs. Cramps and/or restless legs, which are crampy or tingly, particularly at night, may also be a symptom of varicose veins.
Barriers to treatment.
Men with varicose veins often seek help later than their female counterparts. This might be attributed to the misconception that varicose veins only affect women. But also because there is a mistaken belief that people have vein treatment purely for aesthetic reasons, so men don’t feel it’s appropriate to seek help, this couldn’t be further from the truth.
Even if your varicose veins aren’t causing discomfort (at the moment), ignoring them will undoubtedly increase the risk of developing more severe health issues as you age.
