One of the unexpected symptoms of venous insufficiency that clients complain about is itchy varicose veins.
Most people understand that pain, throbbing and swelling are nasty side-effects of varicose veins. But it’s more difficult to correlate the link between their veins and the itchiness on their legs. So, in this month’s blog article, we thought we’d share why you might suffer from itchy varicose veins.
Itchy varicose veins – The causes:
If you have varicose veins, a lot is going on beneath the surface of your skin that you might not know about; that’s why we always recommend our complimentary Doctor’s Vein Assessment and Scan.
Healthy valves open to allow blood flow, then close to stop it flowing backwards. When this simple pump system malfunctions, the blood pools, causing pressure in the vein. To reduce this pressure, the blood often leaks out of the vein and into the surrounding soft tissue. This, in turn, causes the skin over the veins to become red and itchy.
Left untreated itchy varicose veins may develop into more severe conditions, like, varicose eczema, cellulitis or venous leg ulcers. Find out more in this article from the archives.
Finding relief from itchy veins:
If you have itchy skin around your varicose veins, it’s essential to avoid scratching the area. If you break the skin, you can often find yourself on the path to ulceration.
Your GP or pharmacist may recommend topical creams or moisturisers to reduce the inflammation on the surface of the skin. But the only way to alleviate itchy varicose veins is to get to the root of the problem… Treat the varicose veins!
