As a specialist varicose vein practice based in Nelson and working through Marlborough, we have treated many clients. One thing we know for sure is that the severity and symptoms of varicose veins differ for everybody. But in this article, we thought we’d look more at how varicose veins can affect your life.
How varicose veins can affect your life:
Varicose veins can cause pain and discomfort; your legs may feel achy, heavy or tired. Or you may feel a burning or throbbing sensation in your legs. Nighttimes can be uncomfortable because you may suffer from restless legs, which are crampy or tingly. Your skin may feel dry and itchy.
While not all varicose veins are visible, most are, and the physical appearance of varicose veins can certainly affect levels of self-confidence. They are often blue or dark purple. Furthermore, they often present as lumpy, bulging or twisted in appearance.
Visible varicose veins will often affect what you choose to wear or the activities you choose to do. Many people feel uncomfortable wearing shorts or a swimsuit, choosing to cover their legs and miss out on pastimes they enjoy.
More Serious Medical Conditions:
Veins form an essential part of the circulatory system; they return blood to the heart after body cells exchange waste products for Oxygen. So, whenever varicose veins present with painful or visual symptoms, there will likely be a medical issue at the root.
Nearly all leg vein problems will slowly get worse over time. The most severe varicose veins can lead to various problems, including varicose eczema, cellulitis, and venous leg ulcers.
So, for those with varicose veins but no symptoms (this is not uncommon, and we don’t understand why), there can be very good medical reasons to have them treated!
