Cellulitis is a common bacterial skin infection. Skin presents as red and swollen. Additionally, it is typically painful and warm to the touch. The condition is potentially severe. Any infection, left untreated, can spread to your lymph nodes and bloodstream and rapidly become life-threatening.
It is the skin on the lower legs that is most at risk for cellulitis. Like everything in life, it pays to address the underlying cause when a patient presents with cellulitis, rather than just treat the symptoms.
Cellulitis and Untreated Varicose Veins:
Cellulitis infections will often occur where there is chronic venous insufficiency or untreated varicose veins. Chronic venous insufficiency causes inflammation within the skin and underlying tissues. As a result, skin becomes firm, dry, itchy, tender and fragile. Unlike healthy skin, this delicate surface is more likely to see bacterial infections enter the tissues through cracked or broken skin.
Treat varicose veins effectively, and you will undoubtedly improve the health of the skin on your lower legs. In turn, this can reduce your susceptibility to the danger of cellulitis.
We have successfully treated many patients who have previously suffered bouts of cellulitis. We offer walk-in walk-out varicose vein treatments in both Nelson and Blenheim.
Varicose Vein Treatments:
- Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy (UGFS) uses specialised ultrasound equipment to guide injections of sclerosant which permanently closes the vein. This procedure is virtually painless, so requires no anaesthesia.
- Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA), the gold standard varicose vein treatment, again, requires no general anaesthesia or hospital stay. You walk in and walk out (wearing compression stockings for two weeks), and you are even able to drive home afterwards.
We have Affiliated Provider status with Southern Cross and are also accepted for cover by NIB, Sovereign, FMG, UniMed, Accuro and OnePath.
If you have had cellulitis in the past, you may be suffering from venous insufficiency contact us. If you are uncertain, we offer a complimentary no-obligation Doctor’s assessment with Ultrasound Mapping in Blenheim, as well as our Nelson clinic.
