Autumn Skincare – Products, Treatment and Nutrition

Autumn is knocking at the door in Nelson… So it’s time to think about switching up your skincare for the season ahead and addressing any signs of sun damage.

autumn skincareProduct we ❤️… PCA Skin Hyaluronic Acid Boosting Serum – Your Autumn Skincare Saviour!

Plump and firm skin through increased hydration with this advanced hyaluronic acid formulation. This smoothing blend provides deep, long-lasting hydration on three levels: on the surface, deeper in the skin and by increasing the skin’s own hyaluronic acid production.
  • Instant hydration and smoothing on the surface of the skin.
  • Deeper hydration and fine line reduction with the addition of hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid.
  • Proprietary blend HA-Pro Complex™ encourages the skin to create its own hyaluronic acid, resulting in long-term anti-ageing and hydration.
  • Suitable for dry, dehydrated and sensitive skin, red and reactive skin types, impaired barrier function and ageing concerns.

Treatments to Save Your Skin…

Lower humidity levels and autumn winds can dry out your skin leaving it flaky, cracked, itchy and red. As you light the fire or switch on the heating, the dryness can get worse, and when you take a long soak in the bath to warm up, contrary to what you may think, you’re stripping your skin of even more moisture!

Thankfully, at enhanceskin, we can help SYS (Save Your Skin) improving both texture and appearance with minimally invasive treatments.

Solutions can include, IPL Skin Rejuvenation, Fractora Fractional Resurfacing PLUS, Platelet Rich Plasma Growth-Factor (PRP), Micro-Needling, and our always popular Medi Facials.

Remember we offer a FREE, cosmedical consult, so contact us to book yours and save your skin, or say goodbye to summer sun damage.

Skincare from the Inside Out!

The human microbiome is getting more and more recognition, in particular, the role it plays in health and healing in the human body. It is made up of a complex ecosystem of billions of beneficial bacteria that work simultaneously to maintain good health and a strong immune system.

Your diet plays a big part in establishing gut health and supporting your microbiome’s good bacteria. Not only will this help with your gut, all the vitamins and minerals are going to help build beautiful skin cells.

Ensuring that you are consuming lots of nutritious fruit and vegetables that are full of antioxidants, is a great way to prep your skin for Autumn. Foods that are vibrant in colour, reds, blues, purples, all contain large amounts of free-radical fighting antioxidants and flavonoids, which help to repair and protect our delicate skin cells.

Berry smoothies, green tea, garlic, turmeric, tomatoes, avocados, broccoli, sweet potatoes are just some of the foods that can help you achieve beautiful, radiant skin. Think of these as part of your internal skin care regime.

Why our clients ❤️ Lacey

Have you met Lacey yet? She’s been part of the team at enhanceskin for over two years, and it seems she is no longer Nelson and Blenheim’s best kept secret. The word is out that Lacey’s calm and understanding manner, combined with her gentle technique make her a much sought after injector!

Lacey will tell you that much of her success lies with the fact that that she trained under David’s expert eye… Lacey says, “David has enabled me to learn specific techniques related to cosmetic medicine that he has mastered, he has an attention to detail that has allowed me to follow through with these techniques to a very high standard.”

Lacey joined us as a registered nurse with a background on various surgical wards, but says that working within the facial aeshetics industry has been rewarding in ways she didn’t expect it to be. She says, “I love working with the different people I get to meet. Formulating plans of care and seeing the positive reactions from clients when they get the results they were looking for is exciting! I love witnessing the change in a person’s confidence. The technology and products and services we can offer is consistently being updated, there’s always something new to master.”

How Lacey helps you achieve a natural look in three simple steps:

  1. Lacey will listen to your concerns, answer your questions and formulate a personalised plan according to your budget and priorities.
  2. She’ll help you set realistic goals. You’ll be asked to bring photos of people whose facial aesthetics you admire, together with photo of yourself from five to ten years ago. Lacey will give you an honest opinion on whether your desires are appropriate or inappropriate for your face shape and size.
Lacey says, “At enhanceskin, we pride ourselves on our anatomy and physiology knowledge. This is vital to minimise risk. An understanding of the different aesthetic ratios for the face for a natural appearance again is crucial.”
  3. Lacey will ensure your after treatment care is all in hand.
Lacey says, “Using the correct skin care post treatment is crucial. Your skin will glow with the right vitamins. Just like your body, your skin needs nutrients.”

You can find Lacey in our Nelson and Blenheim clinics. In Nelson Lacey offers a full range of cosmedical treatments, and in Blenheim she offers selected treatments, including Botox, Dermal Fillers, IPL & Fractora Consultation and Dermapen treatment. Men’s ageing concerns… A blog for the boys.

As a society, we’ve been conditioned to think that it’s just women who have a desire to age well, but at enhanceskin, we can make testament to the fact that this is not so… We often help with men’s ageing concerns, and a great many of our clients are indeed, gentlemen!

While men and women’s skin are significantly different in makeup, many of the cosmedical treatments we offer can help both men and women address their skin concerns.

mens ageing concerns

So how exactly can we help men?

Botox (or as we like to call it when we’re looking at men’s ageing concerns… Brotox!) – This simple non-surgical procedure should not be reserved for the fairer sex. Botox (Botulinum toxin) softens the fine lines or wrinkles caused by facial expressions, stress and sun. As a natural, purified protein, it relaxes the facial muscles that cause problem wrinkles, creating a smooth, rejuvenated and more youthful appearance.

IPL Skin Rejuvenation – Sebum production is greater in men than women, this combined with the outdoor lifestlye so many men enjoy in New Zealand, can lead to facial redness that increases with ageing. IPL Skin Rejuvenation will significantly reduce redness and broken veins, improving the overall tone and texture of a man’s skin.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) – This procedure involves taking a blood sample, concentrating the platelets from that sample and reinjecting the platelets back into the body to assist healing and regenerate tissue. This occurs because the platelets secrete a concentrated mix of Growth Factors. These Growth Factors stimulate repair cells. It can be used to treat a variety of cosmetic issues, but in me it’s most commonly used to address acne scarring, neck crinkling, and regrowth of areas of hair loss.

Varicose Vein Treatments – While these shouldn’t necessarily be catalogued under men’s ageing concerns because varicose veins can develop from a young age… We felt we had to make reference to the varicose vein treatments we carry out at enhanceskin in this article, because there often appears to be another misconception that varicose veins only affect women, and this is not so, we treat lots of men who have varicose veins! We utilise the minimally invasive Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA), and/ or Ultrasound Guided Foam Sclerotherapy (UGFS). Together they’re the gold standard varicose vein treatment, designed to be fast, fairly pain-free and totally effective. It’s walk-in and walk-out, and you can even drive yourself home afterwards. If you hate needles and stockings you might be up for Venaseal, the medical glue that is comparing well with EVLA!

The list above is just a small selection of popular treatments we offer gentlemen, but we offer many other solutions that may be appropriate for your specific needs. Contact us to book your FREE cosmedical consultation so we can help to address your men’s ageing concerns, or to book your FREE Doctor’s vein assessment and scan.

3 types of facial lines & how to soften them…

Everyone gets facial lines at some stage in life, but at enhanceskin we can help reduce these. In this week’s blog we thought we’d look at three areas of the face where lines and deep wrinkles often develop into tell tale signs of aging.

Facial Lines

Neck Lines:

No matter how youthful your face looks your neck can often give the game away. Deep lines and saggy skin are difficult to conceal in this area, but before you reach for a polo neck sweater have you considered these two treatment options?

  • Fractora – A procedure that uses fractionated energy to rejuvenate and resurface the skin. It is able to slow the effects of aging and restore your skin, so you can look and feel younger. Fractora is perfect for reducing fine or deep facial lines and tightening the skin, say goodbye to the turkey neck!
  • Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) – A procedure which involves taking your own blood, concentrating the platelets from that sample and reinjecting the platelets with their concentrated mix of growth factors, back into your skin to assist healing and regenerate tissue, especially collagen and elastin. This is especially good for use on crinkling skin around neck and décolletage.
  • Botox – This relaxes the muscles that cause the crinkly necklace lines.

At enhanceskin we will usually recommend a combination of these treatment options on neck lines.

Frown Lines:

The vertical lines that develop between your eyebrows and nose when you frown will have been less troubling in your youth. When your skin is youthful and full of elasticity and collagen, these superficial, dynamic lines will have disappeared when you stopped frowning. As you age frown lines may become deeper and visible even when not frowning… Nobody wants to look cross all the time, so we help you say goodbye to angry frown lines. The star of the show in these cases is often Botox. This simple, non-surgical procedure softens the facial lines and wrinkles caused by facial expressions and is a highly effective treatment to help reduce frown lines.

Mouth Lines:

As you grow older, your face and bone structure change, losing volume, often leaving hollows and sagging and leading to deep grooves running from the nose to the mouth known as nasolabial folds, and also running down from the corners of your mouth called Marionette lines. To help restore your youthful look, come and talk to us about Dermal Fillers, these help ‘revolumise’ facial features by returning natural elements to the face that have been lost in the aging process. This is the ‘Liquid Facelift’, it gives you an instant ‘wow’ which we love to witness and is one of the things that keeps us coming to ‘work’ each day!

Other options to fight facial lines…

Medi-Facials, sometimes called Chemical Peels, can be used to improve the look of fine lines and wrinkles. Superior to ordinary facials, the medi-facials we offer, provide clinical strength, which are results orientated, corrective treatments. The difference is evident in the truly visible results and long-term durability. These treatments utilise fruit extracts to visibly rejuvenate your skin and complexion,  they work  deep within the skin and encourages the appearance of new healthy cells, texture will look and feel firmer, while fine lines and wrinkles appear dramatically softened. They augment and supercharge the daily skin care regime we will have already recommended you use.

At enhanceskin we believe that aging is part of life, and as you grow older, you should expect your face and bone structure to change. We can’t, and don’t, aim to turn back the clock on aging completely, but we can help you regain fuller and balanced features, achieving a natural look that’s similar to how you looked a few years back.

We offer FREE cosmedical consults at our Nelson clinic and the Churchill Trust Private Hospital in Blenheim. Contact us to book yours.

What exactly is PRP?

PRP has seen a rise in popularity lately… Whilst some may say this is due to Kim Kardashian’s endorsement, (the well known celebrity recently posted a photo of herself on Instagram, having had PRP), here at enhanceskin we prefer to believe it’s because PRP is actually a very effective treatment.

We’ve put together a few of the frequently asked questions we often answer around PRP.

  • Q: What does PRP stand for?
    A: Platelet Rich Plasma-Growth Factor
  • Q: How does it work?
A: Platelet Rich Plasma is a procedure that involves taking a blood sample, concentrating the platelets from that sample and reinjecting the platelets back into the body to assist healing and regenerate tissue. This occurs because the platelets secrete a concentrated mix of Growth Factors. These Growth Factors stimulate repair cells.
  • Q: Can anybody have PRP?
A: PRP is not for everyone. Smokers, drug and heavy alcohol users all get poor results. The tar from cigarettes especially inhibits growth factor production. This treatment cannot be performed on people with platelet or clotting disorders, sepsis or acute and chronic infections. It also cannot be used by anyone on anticoagulant and antiplatelet therapy – aspirin, warfarin, dipyridamole or clopidogril; or those with severe systematic disease including metastatic cancer and severe liver disease.
  • Q: What areas can be treated?
A: The short answer is anywhere… PRP is especially good for enhancing the jaw line and lower-face; addressing neck crinkling and crinkling skin around the eyes; also good for restoring cheek and mid-face volume loss; it can be used to treat chest and decolletage, back of hands and arms; suitable treatment to stimulate regrowth of areas of hair loss; can also minimise acne scarring.
  • Q: How long do the results last for?
A: Treatment results vary but once tissue has been regenerated and remodelled that benefit is permanent. What happens, however, is that we continue to get older and the problem areas eventually reappear. It is thought that this occurs over 9-18 months after a single treatment although everyone is different. Touch up treatments will maintain the results.

For more information on PRP visit this page, or call us and we can make an appointment for you to discuss the treatment in more detail with you.

5 lesser known tips to banish acne

BanishAcneAcne is one of the most common issues people have with their skin. It mainly effects teenagers, but many adults can also suffer from acne. Acne ranges in severity from mild to severe, and can cause scarring, as well as psychological problems.

The good news is that acne is treatable, and there are many things you can do to help yourself; some of these are more well publicised than others. You probably know that lifestyle choices in terms of diet, physical exercise and adequate rest can help with healthy skin… So we’ve made a list of our top 5 tips (you might not be aware of) to help banish acne…

  1. Sanitise your smart phone – Cell phones are breeding grounds for germs. Your phone is regularly exposed to thousands of bacteria, these spread from your fingers to your face whilst texting and talking. The heat generated by your phone can help bacteria to multiply. Use headphones wherever possible and wipe the surface of your phone with a little hand sanitiser on a daily basis.
  2. Rest your weary head on fresh pillowcases – Oil, bacteria, sweat and other impurities can build up on your bed linen, so change your pillowcase regularly, daily if possible.
  3. Don’t skip the sunscreen – There are a couple of reasons you might be tempted to do this… Firstly, you notice that after a day in the sun, your skin looks clear and breakout-free. Secondly, you might find sunscreen oily to wear and be worried it will exacerbate your acne. However, inflammation from sunburn can make your acne worse; if you haven’t found a great facial sunscreen visit us in the clinic, we can definitely help with this. A good facial sunscreen shouldn’t be gloopy or oily, we love PCA Skin Weightless Protection.
  4. Do skip the styling products – Or at least use them sparingly. Oily hair products can be a common cause of acne, specifically around the hairline… Trapping acne-causing bacteria in the pores.
  5. Embrace Retinol  – Retinol has amazing anti-inflammatory effects, so it’s as effective at treating acne, as it is at fighting aging. It’s a #winwin situation! We love Aspect Dr Exfol A Plus Serum A.

Over recent years there have been rapid improvement in treatments for acne scarring, utilising techniques that you may not always have considered such as Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), Fillers and Botox, and the highly effective, Fractora – Fractional Resurfacing PLUS.

Acne Scarring – We can help!

I was recently at conference in Melbourne where acne scarring was the focus in a couple of the presentations. Upon my return I read an article in the online version of the Dermatology Terms with input from Greg Goodman, M.D., of The Dermatology Institute of Victoria in Australia.

You can read the full article HERE.

The article focuses on the rapid improvement in treatments for acne scarring, utilising techniques that you may not always have considered such as Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), Fillers and Botox. We perform all the procedures mentioned in the article, including the most effective, Fractora – Fractional Resurfacing PLUS.

Acne occurs when the pores of your skin become clogged, most often on the face, neck, back, and chest, it can be triggered or worsened by;

  • Hormones
  • Some medications
  • Diet
  • Stress

You can help minimise acne scarring by having a good skincare routine in place. We recommend the Teen Aspect Kit, stocked in clinic, as the ideal start to clean, clear skin.

teenaspect

The kit contains:

  • Teen Aspect Cleanser
  • Teen Aspect Toner
  • Teen Aspect Facial Lotion
  • Teen Aspect Stop Spot Travel Stick

Good skincare routines can help with anti-aging.

Who doesn’t want to look younger? We’re not saying that it’ll turn back the clock overnight but a good skincare routine will definitely help your natural beauty shine through, giving you a more youthful appearance.

Young woman washing faceClever Cleansing:

We love Aspect Dr deep cleanse or mild cleanse. Because cleansing is in fact the crucial first step in an effective skin care regimen, the scientists at Aspect™, have actually put a lot of thought into the best way of achieving a fresh, clean skin so that it not only does your skin no harm, but actually enhances your complexion for the better. Be sure to cleanse morning and also importantly at night, but don’t use soap (even fancily packaged “facial” soap), as it will strip your skin of all it’s natural oils.

Soothing Serum:

Apply a serum, we often recommend Aspect Dr Advanced Skin Technology Vitamin C Serum for morning or Vitamin A for night time, pat gently on to the face and decolletage. If you want a big boost serum that will virtually turbo charge your current skincare routine, by infusing your skin with an energising cocktail of Multi B vitamins and a patented blend of skin fortifying sea plants try Aspect Dr Multi B Serum.

Energising Eyes:

Your peepers are always the first place to show visible signs of aging in the form of fine lines and wrinkles. Use a product specifically designed for this delicate area, here are our top 3 picks…

  • The gold standard of eye serums “Results RX Eye Doctor” – $298. The copper complex works with your skin matrix to protect the delicate skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines or puffy eyes.
  • PCA EyeXcellence – $69. This triple-action eye cream reduces puffiness, dark circles and wrinkles around the eye area. A great preventative product for those in their twenties and thirties.
  • Skin Medica TNS Eye Repair – $173. A reasonably priced eye serum that dramatically improves the appearance of the delicate skin around the eyes.

Don’t forget the Protection:

Remember sunscreen (at least SPF 30) should be part of your skin care routine every day, yes that’s summer or winter!

Remember David, Robyn and Sandra can discuss your specific skincare requirements in clinic, pop in and see us.

Cosmetic procedures for your peepers, by jeepers!

As we age we lose volume in our tear trough. The hollow skin can cause shadows and darkness, both of which can make us look older. The following cosmetic procedures are options we’re able to discuss with you at a complimentary cosmedical consultation.

  • Dermal Fillers: Dermal Fillers can be administered by David in Nelson or at Churchill Private Hospital in Blenheim.
  • PRP: Platelet Rich Plasma is a procedure that involves taking a blood sample, concentrating the platelets from that sample and reinjecting the platelets back into the body to assist healing and regenerate tissue.
  • Fractora – Fractional Resurfacing PLUS: Fractora is a procedure that uses fractionated energy to rejuvenate and resurface the skin. It is able to slow the effects of aging and restore your skin, so you can look and feel younger.
